Is there a limit to affiliate marketing?

But it's not just the number of followers that matters, but how much your followers actually engage with your content. If you had 1000 followers and 25% (250 pcs) of your followers would buy the product you have shared on your channel compared to if you have 5000 followers which is better than 1000, but it is only 4% (200 pcs) that buys, then in this case it's the person with the lower number of followers who probably made more money. So just because you have a lot of followers it can be the "wrong" followers, you want an account with a lot of followers but with followers who actually like, share and comment on what you publish. So aim to have an engaging target audience and share products that you think your audience will like and want to engage with.

Another way to make money on Instagram is to have paid collaborations with companies. You promote their products or services via your platform. You agree on the type of content to be created and published, either via a post, story or reel.

All collaborations work differently depending on what you have agreed on and what is written in the brief you receive from the company. Either you get paid a fixed amount or you get a certain percentage of the amount your followers buy for. The number of posts can also differ, some collaborations can last for a longer period, while sometimes it can only be one post. There, you will learn over time what suits you and your target group best. Think quality before quantity – you don't want to follow an account that only publishes advertising.

Choose businesses relevant to your target audience

Here you should think the same as with affiliate collaborations, only work with companies that are relevant to your target group and that go hand in hand with your values. Start from what you publish today on your channel and what your followers would appreciate for the type of collaborations. If you have a training account, a collaboration with a brand that sells training clothes is probably something your target group would really love. But you know your target group best, start from what you think your followers want to see for collaborations.

If you do collaborations - don't forget to advertise

In Sweden, we have the Marketing Act, which is the overarching law that governs how marketing must be carried out correctly. That law exists to protect consumers and to regulate that advertising should not be misleading, aggressive or impermissible. According to this law, no advertising may be hidden, but all paid advertising must always be clearly marked so that the consumer knows that it is actually advertising. If you don't follow that law, you can be fined heavily and we want to avoid that. So remember to always label your collaborations if you received compensation for them.

The more followers and interaction you have on your content, the more you can ask for paid collaborations. When it comes to how much you can earn from affiliate marketing, it of course depends on how many followers you have, but also how engaged your target audience is in combination with what you promote via your channel.
